Twaddell's Tweedmouth winner leaves Burgh on cusp of promotion

Newburgh were quickly back in action following Wednesday evening’s match in the Capital with another road trip, this time across the Border into Berwick to face Tweedmouth Rangers at Shielfield Park.

The Bank Holiday traffic was, surprisingly, quiet but the visitors were buoyed by a coach full of supporters who made sure the stands were anything but quiet.

It was a difficult opening 45 minutes for Burgh, however, as Tweedmouth played the early pressure. In the 17th minute a long, lofted ball forward sent Straughan through towards goal, as he beat Ronnie Martin he fired a low shot that Scott Kyles did well to block with his legs.

The hosts continued pushing towards Burgh’s goal and looking for an opener, but either wayward shooting or resolute defending prevented Kyles’ being too tested at this stage.

Burgh weren’t without their chances of their own and were unlucky not to open the scoring on the half hour mark as Martin’s free kick floated into the Tweedmouth penalty area. Striker Andrew McCallion nipped in ahead of keeper Dunn to flick on. Cammy Taylor wasn’t able to divert his instinctive header on target and the ball landed on the roof of the net.

Momemnts later Ryan Daly sent a ball over the head of the Tweedmouth defence for Nichita Cotorobai to run on, but the Burgh winger’s low ball went into the side netting at the keeper’s near post.

In the 34th minute Owen McCallion cleared off the Burgh line from Roberts’ looping header from a corner, with Woodcock’s follow up blocked by Finn Bannerman for another corner.

On 39 minutes Kyles was again in action diving low to his left to keep out a long range strike from Ovcinnikovs. Two minutes later Straughan broke free on the right but his low shot at the near post was pushed behind by the Burgh keeper.

On the stroke of half time Straughan again worked himself some space to fire a shot just wide of Burgh’s goal.

The second half started brighter for Burgh and in the 53rd minute a ball forward was flicked on by Andrew McCallion for Daly’s first time volley to sting the palms of Dunn.

On 55 minutes Kyles was again called into action to save a low shot with his feet from Straughan. Meanwhile in the 59th minute Cotorobai again tested Dunn low at his near post.

The opening goal was looking elusive and 68th minute McCallion worked the ball looping over the head of Heath and towards goal but Dunn was able to collect.

But the deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when Martin’s ball forward saw Daly beat Roberts to the ball and send over a cross from the touchline. Burgh sub Kieran Twaddell was on hand to beat Heath to the ball to flick a looping effort into the far corner of the net for the lead.

The visitors continued to be indebted to Kyles as he kept out a close range effort in the 78th minute.

At the other end Ryan Heatherill’s low ball into the Tweedmouth area was flicked on by McCallion but Twaddell was unable to make a clean connection to beat Dunn and his shot went from about 6 yards out.

It was a hard-fought, but important, three points for Burgh against a good Tweedmouth side which sees Newburgh needing a single point from the remaining three games to seal promotion.

Man of the Match: Scott Kyles – a well deserved clean sheet was a key part of Burgh getting the points.
