McLaren's 1st goal can't inspire comeback

Burntisland Shippy were the visitors on Tuesday evening for a Fife derby in the League in front a good crowd on a warm night at East Shore Park.

Ethan Stark came close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute when his free kick from wide of the left narrowly flew past the far post with Callum Roughead unable to add a final connection.

Moments later Finn Bannerman got through wide on the left to run through and fire a low shot across the face of goal.

On 14 minutes debutant goalkeeper Scott Bryson was out well to head clear on the edge of his area after Roughead’s clearance was quickly returned by Marr’s long ball.

Marr took matters with his own hands with two goalward headers from corners from the right in the 18th and 27th minute, but neither troubled Bryson.

Another corner from the right on the half hour mark did give the Burgh keeper some work but the young stopper did well to punch clear through a crowd of bodies, whilst he was out quickly to block at the feet of Forster in the 32nd minute.

On 34 minutes Ryan Daly and Stark combined well for the Burgh number 7 to charge towards goal and unleash a shot that Shippy keeper Russell parried and caught at the second attempt. Lyall Brown had the Burgh’s next chance with a low long-range strike that Russell dived to his right to save in the 42nd minute.

As the second half got underway, Burgh had a good move on the right which was played low in the Shippy area and was laid off by Brown into the path of the on-running Daly who, unfortunately, dragged his shot just wide of target.

The opening goal came on 65 minutes, however, after Bryson dived bravely at the feet of Galloway and the ball was cleared by a defender before falling at the feet of Bauld who unleashed a shot from nearly 25 yards into the top corner of the net.

Matters took a turn for the worse just two minutes later when Marr ghosted in unmarked at the far post to head home from a corner to make it 2-0 to Shippy.

With daylight fading, Daly’s persistence did well as he battled the attention of two defenders to get a low shot away towards the near post that Russell was down to save in the 75th minute.

Burgh were given a lifeline on 82 minutes as Kieran Twaddell was fouled as he went for a shot and Finn McLaren stepped up with a rifling spot kick to open his Burgh account.

With time moving into stoppage time, Daly twisted and turned his man on the left hand side of the area to again fire a low goal-bound shot to the near post but Russell was down to save.

With seconds left, Shippy nearly grabbed a third as a striker beat the advancing Bryson to the ball and lofted a shot towards goal but wide of target.

Man of the Match: Keir Bruce – another solid display from the new signing.
