The game, itself, wasn’t a classic by any means with few goalmouth chances of any note. What there were, however, saw the visitors have more than the lion’s share of those opportunities.

In the 14th minute a corner from the left was headed goalwards by a Luncarty attacker with Ben Duffield doing well to block twice on the line with a third effort hacked away.

On 22 minutes the same set-piece caused further problems as the corner was headed goalwards at the back post by Lamont for Robertson to turn an effort just wide of Duffield’s post. The Burgh keeper was out well to narrow the angle and block an effort with his foot a few minutes later.

Burgh’s first real chance came in the 37th minute when Cammy Taylor picked up possession on the edge of his own area and played a quick ball forward for Ryan Daly on the break. With Burgh light on numbers for the break, the Burgh man’s long range effort didn’t pose too much trouble for Luncarty keeper Simpson.

The opening goal came on 40 minutes as Lamont hoofed a high ball forward which saw Callum Roughead and Davies collide with the Burgh defender coming off worst with a hard knock to his chest. The officials continued play and Burgh’s remaining defenders allowed the Luncarty forward too much space and time to get the ball down and curl a shot from over 20 yards out past a flat-footed Duffield into the net.

There were few further chances until the 69th minute when good play by Blair Campbell laid off a space for sub Ethan Stark to fire a low shot that was blocked by Luncarty’s Clarke for a corner.

But it was always looking like Luncarty were most likely to score one of the few chances that may arise and they should have added a second on 72 minutes when Davies turned and skied an effort with only Duffield to beat.

Rhys Sneddon was presented with a chance on 84 minutes from a free kick outside the visitors’ penalty area, but his effort was no trouble for Simpson as the keeper was able to get his body behind the effort to save.

With time running out, Luncarty sub Proudfoot was unlucky with a looping effort past the advancing Duffield that landed just wide of goal in the 86th minute.

As the clock ticked deep into stoppage time, Lamont needlessly conceded a free kick on the left hand touchline for a shove on Kieran Twaddell.

Sneddon rolled the dice and hit a double six as his cross found the head of big defender Calum Leadbeatter to fire a powerful header into the far corner past Simpson to force a 95th minute leveller and force a penalty shoot out.

This time, Burgh’s luck from the spot ran out. Despite Lyall Brown’s first effort rebounding off the bar and in off Simpson’s back for Newburgh’s opening kick, Simpson repeated his South Challenge Cup heroics for the ‘Bleachers’ where he saved three penalties, by diving to save Logan Duff’s second kick.

With Luncarty keeping a 100% record, Twaddell found the net with Burgh’s third kick to trail 3-2.

The game was set for Duffield to repeat his own shoot-out heroics and he dived to keep out Luncarty’s 4th kick. But the official’s must have consulted ‘hawk eye’ with the accuracy of a VAR review at Old Trafford discussing a Man City goal, to decide the Burgh keeper must have been literally millimetres off his line and ordered a re-take.

Walker stepped up again for Luncarty and made no mistake with his second attempt. What could have been a turning point in the shoot out, ended up turning up further pressure on Burgh’s next penalty.

That duty fell to Sneddon and Simpson brilliantly dived to his left to somehow manage to stick a hand up to keep out the penalty and the visitors had won 4-2 on penalties.

To be fair, Burgh probably didn’t deserve anything from the game and we move on, whilst wishing Luncarty the best of luck in the next round.
