After a turbulent few days, Burgh had caretaker managers in Conor Caldwell and Stevie Perrie in the dug out for the Alex Jack Cup visit to Perth neighbours, Kinnoull, who sit in the First Division.

There seemed to be little sign, however, of any disruption as Burgh started the game looking sharp and organised.

In fact, it was Newburgh who took the lead in the 17th minute when Nichita Cotorobai capitalised after a high bounce beat former Burgh keeper Sean Martin for his first goal for the club as he rolled home into an empty net from an wide angle.

In the 21st minute Cammy Taylor did well to block as Wolecki pulled the trigger to shoot at Ben Duffield’s goal then Kinnoull’s forward had another effort four minutes later that Duffield was able to push away from danger.

Skipper Blair Campbell was looking lively as he burst between three Kinnoull defenders to fire a powerful shot that Martin was able to block in the 27th minute, whilst two minutes later Kian Beattie’s free kick into the box was headed down by Roughead and a desperate late block forced a corner from Campbell’s shot.

Duffield was down well to get his body behind Wolecki’s shot in the 38th minute

Campbell was looking lively and he did well to beat Martin to Daly’s knock down to poke just wide of the post in the 42nd minute.

‘Noull started the second half looking to get back into the game and Duffield was on hand to block a shot with his feet in the 47th minute. But the Burgh keeper was aided by some stubborn defending as Robertson and then Roughead did excellently to get last ditch blocks in to stop shots at goal.

The home side did break Burgh’s resistance, unfortunately, in the 63rd minute when a powerful low drive from Chalmers found the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-1.

The game could have gone either way with both defences seemingly on top and able to get a foot in to spare their keeper’s involvement before Chalmers, Kinnoull’s second half substitute, rattled the Burgh bar with a side-footed effort from a low ball into the box in the 81st minute.

The home side seemed to have broke Newburgh hearts with what looked like the winner in the 86th minute as Chalmers again involved as his corner from the left curled in sharply high at the near post to make it 2-1.

However, Burgh were not giving up and in the 89th minute they pulled level as Roughead’s long throw was flicked on by Kieran Twaddell and fell nicely to Brown at the back post to knock home to force a penalty shoot-out.

Brown was first up from the spot and coolly converted, with Newsome next up for Burgh. But it was Kinnoull’s second spot kick from Sweeney that was superbly saved by Duffield that saw Burgh keep their 100% record with Twaddell and McLaren netting the third and fourth kick leaving Campbell to finish off the tie for a 5-3 win on penalties.

It was a good, solid performance from Burgh with the defence standing firm and organised, whilst Newsome and Beattie controlled the midfield as Burgh set up a home tie with another Perth side, Luncarty, in Round 2 on Saturday 12th September at East Shore Park.
