On a warm sunny October afternoon, we welcomed Coldstream in the 2nd round East of Scotland Qualifying Cup with both teams looking to secure an away tie to Glenrothes in the next round.
Burgh made a blistering start when Andy McCallion latched on to a through ball to smash a great shot past the Coldstream keeper in the 1st minute. The next 15 mins seen Burgh push forward with several chances to extend their lead.
Gradually Coldstream found their feet, and they were back level in the 21st minute when a mix up between Callum Roughead and GK Sean Martin dealing with a long ball seen the ball bounce through with Callum fouling the striker as he tried to make amends. The resultant penalty was expertly despatched to tie the game.
Coldstream now had their tails up and were now pushing with Burgh allowing too much space and time. However, it wasn’t all one-way traffic with burgh squandering a few good chances which was to be their downfall throughout the game.
Coldstream’s 2nd goal came 5 mins before half time when after a great initial sliding tackle by Callum Roughead to block a shot the ball deflected to the winger who was allowed far too much space to drift across the 18 yard box before firing past Sean.
Burgh again made a good start to the 2nd half but couldn’t find the equaliser and were made to pay when Coldstream killed the game off after the ball was given away in midfield and quickly played into left winger to fire a diagonal shot into the far corner.
It was one of those games when the things that Burgh tried just didn’t work, and this was summed up perfectly on the last couple of mins when Nichitia goal bound shot was deflected wide by Andy as he tried to desperately to get out of the way and with the GK beaten.
Almost immediately after Coldstream’s long ball wasn’t dealt with allowing the striker to collect and seal the game in the final 30 seconds.
Overall Coldstream deserved the win with Sean kept busy but as a few will say goals change games and if Burgh had taken some of their chances it might have been a different story.
Good luck to Coldstream in the next round.
